Artifact offers only the surface that remains. Ridges, scars, impressions, erosion, evidence accumulated over time. Whatever made these marks is absent. The viewer arrives afterward and reconstructs a story from what has been left behind.
That is the strange authority of an artifact. It can outlive its maker while withholding almost everything about them. We inherit fragments and call them history, never fully knowing what disappeared between the evidence and the story we built from it.
